When you arrive in India for the first time, at least as a european, everything is a big chock. And for us, it was a big relief and joy to

be able to come home to a great hotel in the evenings, an oasis from the chaotic Mumbai.
The room we stayed in, i think it was a superdeluxe room (it's worth the extra money if you are'nt used to indian standrad!) was perfectly clean and comparative to european standard.
The location is also the best possible - a quite calm area, but still in the middle of everything. Away from chaotic streets of Colaba, and the pushy salesmen of Railsway areas. But still within waking distance from almost everything.
Having read about price in India, we expected everything to be expencive in Mumbai. But after one month of travelling around in the country, we ave noticed that only yhe rooms are pricier in Mumbai. The decent room service breakfast, for example, is still the cheapest and most valuable one we ave had in India.

You could do a lot worse than this hotel in Mumbai. It's not top end and it's not particularly beautiful, but it serves a purpose - good room, not

too expensive and very centrally located. We stayed in the recently renovated first floor with a small window which gave onto the central courtyard. We would have preferred a room that had a balcony onto the street, but those were higher up and under renovation when we were there. The room was well equipped and almost "boutique" standard with a designed bathroom and tv etc - it's been nicely done, though we were looking for more of and old world colonial charm (not really sure this exists any more...). The staff were exceedingly helpful and friendly. Location is great as it's a minute from Marine Drive and five/ten minutes to most the central sights. A great functional hotel - which is not to damn it with faint praise....

Mumbai hotels are expensive, so you shouldn't really judge the prices by other India prices.
The location of this hotel is amazing - about 50 yards from Marine Drive,

within easy walking distance of Churchgate, the museums and galleries at Kala Ghoda.
I stayed in one of the un-renovated rooms. It wasn't the Taj - but then at 30-odd pounds a night I hadn't paid for that! My room was basic but it was spotless, and serviced every day. All four walls of the room were tiled, which looked a bit bleak .
There is a very basic room service menu - Tea, Toast, Eggs and soft drinks, which means you can get breakfast in your room. At Rs 60, the breakfast is good value and the service is fast and (usually) friendly, and the Tea was leaves in a pot with a strainer - something I haven't seen in a UK hotel for years!!
The absence of a restaraunt isn't a problem as there are loads of really good places to eat on Veer Nariman Road. I agree with what's been said on here about the Gaylord (the Garlic Naan there is an amazing thing!) - but I also loved the Tea Centre, on the same side of the road as the hotel, a bit further up VN road
So dion't expect the Taj, as you certainly won't be getting it, but it' does the job!
