This castle was built between 1282 and 1330, and like the other royal strongholds was designed by Master James of St George, but the brief and scale were extraordinary. It was intended to be a seat of government and a royal palace as well as a military complex, which explains its fairytale qualities: colour-banded masonry and polygonal towers.
