A fantasy that's not only beautiful but also an exultant celebration of the bizarre, Portmeirion is a magical place. It's an Italianate village created between 1925 and 1927 by the late Welsh architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, on its own tranquil peninsula not far from his ancestral home. There are 50 buildings around a central piazza.
The holiday village has no residents, only guests. Its Gwyllt Gardens have an uncannily Italian feel, especially on a sunny day. The 28ha (69ac) of immaculate Victorian pleasure gardens and woodlands include rare Himalayan flowering trees and other exotics, and even a dog cemetery.
