This superb building can seem a little bewildering at first. Because of the Christian alterations to the original Islamic structure and the darkness they imposed, you need a little imagination to picture the Mezquita as it was, an architectural unity open to and in harmony with its surroundings.
It has some truly beautiful features, among them the famous rows of two-tier arches in mesmerising stripes of red brick and white stone, and the more elaborate arches, domes and decoration around the splendid mihrab. The outside of the building has thick stone walls punctuated by ornate portals.
