Must See Slovenia - Predjama Castle

Situated in the gaping mouth of a cavern halfway up a hillside, this four-storey castle has the most dramatic settings you could ask for. Perched in the centre of a 123m (404ft) cliff, it looks unconquerable. It was the site of a famous siege of a Slovenian Robin Hood called Erazem in 1483. Erazem was sadly killed by a cannonball while on the toilet.

The eight museum rooms are ho-hum but the position and the views over the valley are incomparable. And it has all the frills that castles should. There's also a 7km (4.5mi) cave network below, 900m (2950ft) of which is open to visitors.
