With the rusting skeletons of giant steel mills as its backdrop, Corvin Castle is considered to be one of Transylvania's greatest architectural gems - and it certainly deserves this title. Built on old Roman fortifications, the fantastical monument, with pointed towers, drawbridge and high battlements, stands as a testament to Hungarian rule.
Inside, five marble columns with delicate ribbed vaults support two halls, the Diet Hall above and the Knight's Hall below, both from 1453. The castle wall was hewn out of 30m (98ft) of solid rock by Turkish prisoners. These days it houses a feudal art museum.
