The striking red-brick arcaded Castle Gate Tower, built in the 16th century, controls passage between the palace and the town. Looted by the Bolshevik army and then turned into a sanitorium, the palace is now undergoing slow restoration. The sprawling architecture of the surviving halls, buildings and lush grounds still make it worth a visit.
