Yerevan's great library of historic manuscripts protects the wealth of 1600 years of scholarship in a huge bunker-like building carved out of a hill. The impressve building at the front has statues of great Armenian scholars including the inventor of the Armenian alphabet, St Mesrop Mashtots.
The display room has examples of ancient Greek texts preserved in Armenian translations, beautifully decorated manuscripts and oddities such as the massive 15th-century Homilies of Moush, which was saved from destruction by two women in 1915 who cut it in half and hauled each piece away on their backs. The two pieces were eventually reunited decades later.
