Ambohimanga (Blue Hill) was the original capital of the Merina royal family. A large, traditional gateway marks the site's entrance, one of seven gateways to the eyrielike hilltop. Near the village is the walled Rova, the palace compound of King Andrianampoinimerina who ruled from 1787 to 1810. The king's home, the Betavo, resembles a black wooden shed.
